“Kelis the Afronaut” is a Black warrior conceptualized by our family collective Juniper Creative Arts. Kelis travels through space and time fighting for justice for all Black and Brown folks. Kelis is part of The Afro-Pollinators who embody joy, love, resilience, and a revolutionary spirit. She typically wears armor that keeps her protected against centuries of oppression and the virus of racism. In spite of anti-Black sentiment and injustice, Kelis remains tender, light, and free because Black joy is her rebellion. Kelis is here to remind us that we are interconnected and that we must live and love in mutuality with the natural and spirit worlds. In doing so we help shape a future world where Black and Brown folks are free and liberated. Kelis is depicted here without her armor because in the world we imagine she doesn’t have to wear protection against racism and oppression. In our world that virus doesn’t have the conditions to thrive, therefore it cannot take hold. In this world, Kelis is free to be Black and full of joy. She holds a poppy flower to honor the lives of those who fought and died in the many revolutions against colonialism, enslavement, and racism.
Original artwork: 15” x 22” hand silkscreened, watercolor, and acrylic marker on 300lb cold press watercolor paper, featured in the “Vermont Utopias” exhibition at Bennington Museum in 2020.
